  Chapter 4:  Ancient India Vocabulary

 

Monsoon-  strong winds that blow across the region at certain times of the Year (in summer they are wet, and in winter they are usually dry)

Migrate-  to move from one place to settle in another area

Caste-  a social class of people in India

Reincarnation-  rebirth of a soul in the body of another living thing

Dharma-  in Hinduism, the religious and moral duties of each person

Ahisma-  in Hinduism,  the idea of being non-violent

Meditate-  to think deeply about sacred things

Nirvana-  the lasting peace that Buddhists seek by giving up selfish desires

 

 

 

PEOPLE TO KNOW:

Brahma-   in Hinduism-  the Creator, created everything on Earth

Vishnu-  in Hinduism-   a kind god concerned with the welfare of humans

Shiva-  very powerful God in Hinduism,  can destroy the world but also create it again

 

Siddhartha Gautama-  founded Buddhism- known as Buddha or "The Enlightened One"
